My Freakin’ 365 + 1 List: Day 355

Day 355, today I not only used a candy thermometer for the first time, but I made Divinity! I’m pretty impressed with myself on this one, even though I had to throw out the first sugar/corn syrup. Let’s just say I lost a pot on that one. Second time was the trick and they look great! My Grandpa Emmett used to make Divinity. I remember eating it when I was a kid, although I don’t think I knew he was the one who made it till years later when my Mom, said more than once, “my Daddy made the best Divinity!” Go do something new! Life can be so sweet, if we let it.

My Freakin’ 365 + 1 List: Day 354

Day 355! With the holidays close at hand, I had a few items on my list to try involving baking. Yesterday it was using a cookie press for the first time, tonight it was making Royal Icing, using meringue powder. I’ve always wanted to try, but I know I’m not Martha in the kitchen, so it was simply enough to make one batch, dye it purple and slap it on some sugar cookies! They are yummy! Go do something new, what will tomorrow bring?

My Freakin’ 365 + 1 List: Day 353

Day 353! For the first time I made Spritz cookies, using a cookie press! I found the set once again at my favorite place to shop the Thrift store! I was pretty worked up about trying this, but my Mother in law walked me through the process of getting them from the tube to the cookie sheet! Go do something new! I call today one success out of lots of failures in the kitchen!

My Freakin’ 365 + 1 List: Day 352

Day 352! Yesterday we had a family Christmas gathering to attend and so I pulled out the Checkboard cake pans I bought several months ago and attempted to make a Checkerboard cake. As you can see from the picture it didn’t quite turn out like all the lovely pictures of Checkboard cakes I’ve seen. I like the idea of this cake so I will certainly use these cake pans again. Go do something new. You can have your cake and eat it too!

My Freakin’ 365 + 1 List: Day 351

Day 351! My Mother in law, Carolyn is in town so the Hubster and I took her out to lunch. I wanted to check out this place called Crumpets Tea Room for my one new thing. It’s a cool little place on the Main street of Genoa. Took us an hour to get there, but I believe it was worth the drive.

We all had the Wild Rice soup and we all would have liked it better if it didn’t have nutmeg sprinkled on the top. I had the Egg Salad on a croissant and it was delicious with dill and celery. I also had the Peppermint dessert that was incredibly yummy and yes, yes I did have the hot chocolate with whipped cream.

When we got back in the truck, I looked up the street and saw the street sign that read, Emmett. My Grandpa’s name was Emmett! Gave me a warm lovely feeling and my heart smiled at the memory of my Grandpa. Go do something new, only two more Fridays this year!

My Freakin’ 365 + 1 List: Day 350

Day 350! Tonight I made No apple, apple pie! Instead of apples you use Ritz crackers. Sounds crazy I know. It calls for a whole lot of sugar, then some water, lemon zest, lemon juice, butter and cinnamon. The texture felt like pie filling, not crackers, but it tasted more like a lemon pie instead of apple. I count that as a win win. I love lemon pie. Go do something new, fake someone out!

My Freakin’ 365 + 1 List: Day 349

Day 349! A few new things today! The 14 year old and I went to a Japanese restaurant here in town called Sakamoto. I’d never been there before. It’s a Sushi place. I’ve not had real sushi before. I ordered Shrimp Tempura Maki and Una Q which had BBQ eel. I’ve never had eel! I also had a Japanese Melon soda and topped it all off with Mochi Ice Cream which is a Japanese rice ball with your choice of ice cream filling, I chose Mango and Chocolate. I struggled a bit with the chopsticks, which surprised me. I kept telling the 14 year old when I was a kid I had a game called Chop Suey. You had to use chop sticks and “capture” the food that was in a bowl that turned. I was pretty good with the chop sticks then. I guess I forgot! Go do something new. Just 17 more days! Will I make it? Sorry, no pictures, I forgot my camera when I spent several minutes arguing with the child to put his coat on!

My Freakin’ 365 + 1 List: Day 347

Day 347! Seems like forever since I’ve been happy with the way a new craft turned out, but I’m happy with this wreath! The picture really doesn’t do it justice, makes it look a bit harsh. I saw a sweet version in that Martha Stewart magazine a long time ago and saved the idea till now. While it doesn’t look much like Martha’s version, this is the Turtle’s version! Go do something new. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. This is me winning over crafts!

My Freakin’ 365 + 1 List: Day 346

Day 346! At Last!! The quest for the Grasshopper has been completed! Unfortunately I do not have a picture of it. The 14 year old had asked to go to a restaurant in Yorkville we had never been to, Wings Etc. So he and I went for lunch, we couldn’t convince the Hubster to come with us. I thought cool, here’s a new restaurant for my list on one new thing!

As I looked over the menu I saw they had ice cream for some of their desserts so I didn’t think it could hurt to ask the waitress if the bartender could make a Grasshopper. He looked it up and talked to me across the bar saying he had the other required ingredients of Creme de menthe and Creme de cacao and he was willing to give it a try for me. Since he wasn’t sure about it or me liking it, he made a small drink in a water glass for me just to try and brought it to me himself. So no pretty glass to take a picture of it, but it was about the drink. I had explained to him, I was trying to do one new thing every day and this had been on my list all year and so far NO ONE had been able to make this for me in a bar or restaurant. I shook his hand and asked his name and thanked him for trying. I took a sip while he watched and with a thumbs up, I old him it was good and the size was just right since I was driving and to charge me what he wanted for this glass.

So special props and a way to go to Enrique over at Wings Etc for helping complete my quest for the elusive Grasshopper. Go do something new, don’t be afraid to ask!

My Freakin’ 365 + 1 List: Day 345

Day 345 Today I ran a new race, The Viking Dash in Crystal Lake. It was very cold, but well worth the trip. Awesome medal and shirts, plus I got 1st place in my age group. I may have been the only one in my age group but so what. I ran my race! Go do something new. Dashing along ready to pillage and plunder and bring good cheer is the Viking Elf!
